Weekday Devotion: The Freeing Work of Jesus Christ

Day 1: Jesus, the One Who Unlocks

Reading: Matthew 16:13–19 — Jesus asks his disciples who they believe him to be, Peter confesses him as the Christ, and Jesus speaks of the keys of the kingdom.

Devotional: Jesus asks this question for a reason. “Who do you say that I am?” is the question that reorients every other question in your life. When Peter answers, everything changes: his name, his calling, his future. Jesus is in the business of unlocking things, and that work begins the moment the Father reveals who Jesus truly is. Today, sit with that question yourself. You know what your tradition says. You know what your neighbors say. Now hear Jesus ask you: Who do you say He is?

Reflection: What has Jesus unlocked in your life that you have not yet fully stepped through?

Day 2: The Grammar of Grace

Reading: Romans 6:20–23 — Paul describes the contrast between bondage to sin and the freedom found in belonging to God, with eternal life as the gift at the end.

Devotional: Martin Luther observed that in Christ we must learn a new grammar. Words we thought we understood—freedom, life, forgiveness—take on an entirely new meaning when Jesus gets hold of them. The world defines freedom as the absence of obligation. Christ defines it as the presence of grace. Freedom in Christ means being held by the right One. Sin promises liberation and delivers chains. Christ promises the cross and delivers resurrection. Let that new grammar sink into you today. In Christ, your life with God is a gift, freely given.

Reflection: Where in your life are you still using the old grammar, trying to earn what has already been freely given?

Day 3: Stones on the Ground

Reading: John 8:1–11 — A woman caught in adultery is brought before Jesus; her accusers surround her with condemnation, but Jesus speaks a word that scatters them and sets her free.

Devotional: She had no defense left. The crowd had already written her ending. But Jesus knelt in the dirt and rewrote it. Notice how He turns the law on the ones holding the stones. One by one, they walked away. Then He turned to her, the one everyone else had given up on, and gave her a new story. This is what Jesus does. He absorbs sin. He restores the broken. Whatever you have been caught doing, whatever crowd has encircled you, Jesus is still kneeling in the dirt, still writing, still speaking.

Reflection: Are you holding a stone today against someone else or against yourself?

Day 4: Faith That Agrees

Reading: Hebrews 11:1–6 — The writer describes faith as the conviction of things not yet seen and the foundation of a life that pleases God.

Devotional: Faith agrees with Jesus. It is that simple. When Jesus says you are forgiven, faith says, “Amen.” When Jesus says, “Go and sin no more,” faith follows. When Jesus says, “Take these keys and set someone else free,” faith acts. The great temptation is to treat the words of Christ as inspiring, perhaps, but ultimately optional words. Faith receives His words as truth and clings to Jesus on good mornings and hard ones. Again and again, faith agrees with Jesus even when everything else says otherwise.

Reflection: Is there a word Jesus has spoken over your life that you have been slow to agree with?

Day 5: The Church, Unlocked and Unleashed

Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17–20 — Paul declares that those who belong to Christ are new creations and have been entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation.

Devotional: The keys of heaven are meant to be used on the people around you who are still tangled, still bound, still waiting for someone to speak a word of grace into their ears. The Church is the place where freedom gets applied, again and again, seventy times seven. You carry the same gospel that scattered a crowd of stone-throwers and gave a broken woman a brand-new story. That gospel is in your hands. Go use it. Stick it in someone’s ears. Turn their key. Set them free.
