Out of Darkness, Into Light

Day 1: Coming Out of the Shadows

Reading: John 3:1-8

Devotional: Nicodemus came to Jesus under cover of darkness, perhaps afraid of what others might think. How often do we approach Jesus cautiously, hedging our bets, protecting our reputation? Like Nicodemus, we want to stay in control, to remain "in the know." But Jesus invites us to something radically different—to be born again, to surrender our need for control. This Lent, consider what keeps you in the shadows. What fears prevent you from stepping fully into relationship with Christ? Jesus doesn't condemn your hesitation; He simply waits, ready to meet you wherever you are. The journey from darkness to light begins with one honest step toward Him, even if that step feels uncertain.

Day 2: The Heart of God's Mission

Reading: John 3:16-17

Devotional: These may be the most memorized verses in Scripture, yet their truth remains revolutionary: God came not to condemn but to save. In a world that often feels defined by judgment—both from others and from within ourselves—this message breaks through like dawn. Jesus didn't wait for us to clean up our act, to understand everything correctly, or to become worthy. He came while we were still lost, still confused, still clinging to our illusions of control. Today, receive this truth personally: God's posture toward you is love, not condemnation. Where you expect judgment, He offers salvation. Let this reality reshape how you see yourself and how you extend grace to others who are struggling.

Day 3: When the Church Forgets Mercy

Reading: Luke 15:11-24 (The Prodigal Son)

Devotional: The Church is called to reflect Christ's mission of salvation, yet we sometimes become gatekeepers of condemnation instead. We remember people's sins long after God has forgiven them. We watch and wait for failure rather than celebrating new beginnings. The father in this parable shows us a different way—running toward the returning sinner with celebration, not suspicion. This Lent is a time for corporate repentance. Have you withheld grace from someone who has genuinely repented? Have you kept an account of wrongs when God has wiped the slate clean? Ask God to give you His heart for those seeking to start over, and become an agent of restoration rather than condemnation.

Day 4: Drawn to the Cross

Reading: John 19:38-42

Devotional: At the end of John's Gospel, Nicodemus emerges from the shadows. The man who once came to Jesus secretly now publicly associates with Him—at the most dangerous moment, at the cross. This wasn't the result of perfect understanding or careful calculation. This was the magnetic pull of sacrificial love. The cross draws us out of hiding. It exposes our need and reveals God's provision. Nicodemus finally understood: Jesus wasn't another teacher to consult; He was the Savior to follow, even unto death. What is the cross drawing out of you this Lent? What hidden fears, secret doubts, or carefully protected pride is God inviting you to lay down at the foot of the cross?

Day 5: Living in the Light

Reading: 1 John 1:5-9

Devotional: Walking in the light means living in honesty—about who God is and who we are. It means confessing that we don't have it all together, that we need saving, that our knowledge and control are illusions. But here's the beautiful promise: when we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. The Christian life isn't about maintaining appearances or staying "in the know." It's about continually stepping out of darkness into the light of God's grace. Today, practice living in the light. Confess one area where you've been hiding. Share your struggles with a trusted friend. Receive again the forgiveness that is always available in Christ.

As you journey through this Lent, remember: Jesus came not to condemn you, but to save you. Step out of the shadows and into His marvelous light.
