Day 1: The Courage and Foolishness of Stepping Out

Reading: Matthew 14:22-33

Devotional: Peter did not step out of the boat quietly. He stepped out loudly, eager to be seen, eager to prove something. And yet, Christ met him there anyway. This is the grace of God. He does not wait for our motives to be pure before he reaches out his hand. He meets us in the storm, even when we created the situation ourselves through pride. Consider today where you may be stepping out for the wrong reasons. Ask God to examine your heart, and trust that even in your imperfection, his arm is strong enough to hold you.

Day 2: The Shape God Makes of Us

Reading: Jeremiah 18:1-6

Devotional: The potter does not abandon a flawed vessel. He reworks it. This is the patient nature of God toward his people. Peter was reworked many times before he became the man who wrote his epistles. He was corrected at the Last Supper. He was rebuked in the garden. He was restored on the shore after the resurrection. Each moment was the hand of God pressing and shaping. The clay does not instruct the potter. It yields. Today, consider where God may be pressing on you. Rather than resisting the discomfort of that forming, ask what he is making you into.

Day 3: The Word That Does Not Return Empty

Reading: Isaiah 55:10-11

Devotional: Isaiah records God's declaration that his word accomplishes what he intends it to accomplish. It is not passive. It is not merely informational. It is active and living, moving through the hearts and minds of those who receive it. This is why Christian education is not a program. It is an encounter with the living God. Whether you are a child hearing a Bible story for the first time or a seasoned believer reading a familiar passage, the Holy Spirit is at work. Open the Word today expecting it to do something in you, because according to God himself, it will.

Day 4: From Pride to Humility -- The Long Road of Formation

Reading: 1 Peter 5:5-7

Devotional: The man who once refused to let Jesus wash his feet eventually quoted the Psalms and said that, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." That transformation did not happen overnight. It happened through failure, correction, grief, restoration, and years of walking with the Holy Spirit. Peter learned humility the hard way, and so do most of us. But the destination is worth the road. When Peter finally understood that he could cast every anxiety onto Christ, he walked toward Rome without fear. That same peace is available to you today. It begins with the simple and difficult act of letting go of what you are trying to prove.

Day 5: Waiting for the Seas to Calm

Reading: Psalm 46:1-11

Devotional: The psalm declares that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, and then calls us to be still and know that he is God. The young Peter could not be still. He had to act, had to move, had to prove. The older Peter learned to wait. He learned that God does not need our frantic energy to accomplish his purposes. He needs our trust. Today, whatever storm surrounds you, consider whether your first instinct is to leap out of the boat or to wait on the Lord. Stillness before God is not passivity. It is the deepest form of faith.
