Set Free: Reformation Observance

Pastor Danny Eggold • October 19, 2026

This upcoming weekend, we observe and celebrate Reformation

On October 24-25, we celebrate the Lutheran Reformation, remembering Martin Luther's work and the rediscovery of the Gospel truth at the heart of our faith: We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, because of Christ alone. This truth changed the course of the Church’s history. More importantly, it continues to change lives today.

Throughout history, people have endured imprisonment, exile, and persecution for the sake of the truth. Martin Luther himself spent nearly a year hidden away in Wartburg Castle, where he translated the New Testament into German so that ordinary people could hear and read God’s Word for themselves. Though confined behind castle walls, Luther continued to experience the freedom that comes through the Gospel. God’s Word was at work, reaching beyond those walls and into people's hearts and lives.

Jesus tells us in John 8:32, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” What wonderful words these are! And what wonderful freedom Jesus gives us. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He has released us from the bondage of sin and the burden of trying to earn our place with God. His grace comes to us as a gift. His forgiveness restores us. His love gives us a permanent place in the Father’s household.

This is the freedom we celebrate on Reformation Weekend.

This freedom continues to shape our lives together as God’s people. The Church lives continually under the reforming power of God’s Word. Every generation needs to hear Christ's promises again. Every generation needs to rediscover the joy of forgiveness, the comfort of God’s grace, and the calling to love and serve our neighbors. The Holy Spirit continues this work among us as we gather around God’s Word and Sacraments.

This freedom is also a wonderful paradox. We find our security in God’s unchanging promises, even as His Word continues to shape and renew us. We sing of God as our “mighty fortress,” our refuge and strength, while trusting that His Spirit is continually at work in His Church. Rooted in Christ, we are free to grow, to serve, and to share His mercy with the world.

As we celebrate Reformation Weekend, I encourage you to make worship a priority. Come and hear the Gospel again, the Gospel that sets us free. Come and receive the gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation that Christ so generously gives. Come and join your brothers and sisters in Christ as we lift our voices in praise of the God who has been our refuge through every generation.

Our life together at St. Peter’s is grounded in God's gracious work. Each time we gather for worship, the Lord meets us in His Word, strengthens our faith, forgives our sins, and sends us into the world to serve. What a gift it is to share this freedom!

As we remember the Reformation, may we rejoice in the truth that has sustained the Church through the centuries and continues to sustain us today. In Christ, we have been set free. And in that freedom, we have the joy of living as His people.

A mighty fortress is our God!

In Christ,

Pastor Danny
