5 Day Devo: Presence of God
Sermon by Pastor Adam McDowell
5-Day Devotion
Day 1: You Are Not Alone
Reading: 2 Timothy 4:9-18
Devotional: Paul, awaiting execution under house arrest, names those who have left and those who remain. Among the faithful few, Luke stays. There is something understated about a person who simply will not leave. Think of the people in your life who have remained when others departed. More than any human companion, Christ is the one who never abandons you. Where others must eventually say, "I have to go," He does not. Whatever isolation you carry today, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, bring it before God. You are not alone. He has not left.
Day 2: The Physician Who Heals What Medicine Cannot
Reading: Luke 5:17-32
Devotional: Luke the physician understood better than most that there are conditions no medicine can reach. He watched Jesus heal the paralyzed, restore the broken, and call the outcast to the table. But the deeper healing Luke witnessed was the forgiveness of sin, the one diagnosis every person shares and no human remedy can cure. Sin isolates, hardens, and burdens the heart. Yet Christ, the Great Physician, does not merely manage the condition. He removes it entirely. Reflect today on the areas of your life where you have sought lesser remedies. Bring those places to the one who heals completely.
Day 3: The Cross as the True Cure
Reading: Isaiah 53:4-6
Devotional:
Isaiah describes a suffering servant who bears the weight of what belongs to others. In Isaiah 53:4-6, the prophet declares that this servant carries our griefs, our sorrows, and the punishment that brings us peace, and that by his wounds we are healed. What was promised in the Old Testament was fulfilled in Christ, alone on the cross, pricked and wounded, surrounded by those who monitored his death. He endured that isolation so that you would never have to face yours permanently. The cross is not a symbol of defeat. It is the source of every true and lasting healing available to you.
Day 4: Sent Out Carrying the Kingdom
Reading: Luke 10:1-12
Devotional: Jesus sends out seventy-two with almost nothing in their hands, no extra bag, no money, no additional sandals. Yet they carry everything that matters: the proclamation that the Kingdom of God. The same is true for you. You may feel inadequate, under-resourced, or uncertain about what you have to offer those around you. But the word you carry, the Gospel of Christ crucified and risen, is sufficient for every person you will encounter today. You do not need more than that. Go as one who has been healed and sent, trusting that the Kingdom you carry is enough.
Day 5: God With You, Even to the Grave
Reading: Psalm 23
Devotional:
Psalm 23 moves through green pastures and still waters before arriving at the valley of the shadow of death. The psalmist does not avoid that valley. He walks through it, and he does not walk through it alone. The rod and the staff are present. The table is prepared. Goodness and mercy follow all the days of his life. Luke stayed with Paul so that he would not face his final days without a companion. But even Luke would one day have to leave. God does not. Into death itself, Christ has gone before you and remains with you. That promise is yours today.
