5 Day Devo: God's Custom Made Love
Sermon by Pastor Danny Eggold
5-Day Devotion: God's Custom-Made Love & the Wedding Feast
Day 1: You Have Been Invited
Reading: Matthew 22:1-14 — The parable of the king who throws a wedding banquet for his son, gathering guests from every road and corner. Devotional: The invitation was not sent to the deserving. It was sent to everyone — the good and the bad, the broken and the lost. That includes you. God did not wait until you cleaned yourself up before calling you to his table. He called you as you were, from wherever you were standing. The question the parable presses on us is not whether we have been invited. We have. The question is whether we will come. Today, consider what it means to simply say yes to the God who has already said yes to you.
Day 2: Put On Christ
Reading: Galatians 3:27 — The apostle Paul declares that all who have been baptized into Christ have clothed themselves with Christ. Devotional: A custom suit is not bought off a rack. It is made for one person, shaped to one body, fitted through time and attention and care. Paul's image of clothing yourself in Christ at baptism carries the same weight. This is not a generic garment. This is a relationship built stitch by stitch through prayer, through worship, through the slow and patient work of grace. You did not earn these clothes. They were given to you. Today, ask yourself whether you are living like someone who knows what they are wearing — and who made it for them.
Day 3: Time Is the Gift
Reading: Psalm 90:12
— The psalmist asks God to teach us to number our days rightly, so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Devotional: The tailor and the client need time together. There is no shortcut to a perfect fit. In the same way, the spiritual life is not built in a single dramatic moment but in the accumulated weight of ordinary days spent with God. Time in prayer. Time in Scripture. Time at the table. Time in worship. Time in service. These are not burdens. They are the fittings. Each one shapes you more precisely into the person God has always seen when he looks at you. Do not waste the time you have been given. It is not infinite. But it is enough.
Day 4: Freedom That Is Real
Reading: John 8:34-36 — Jesus teaches that everyone who sins is a slave to sin, but that the Son has the power to set people truly free. Devotional: C.S. Lewis observed that at the final judgment, there are only two kinds of people: those who say to God, "thy will be done," and those to whom God says, "thy will be done." Going your own way, refusing the wedding garment, rejecting the invitation — none of that is freedom. It only feels like freedom until you are standing outside in the dark with nothing to say. True freedom is not the absence of God. True freedom is life inside his house, at his table, wearing the clothes he made for you. Today, examine where you are actually looking for freedom, and whether it is the real thing.
Day 5: Wear the Clothes Out
Reading: Colossians 3:12-17 — Paul urges believers to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, patience, and above all, love, letting the peace of Christ rule in their hearts. Devotional: The suit is not meant to hang in a closet. It is meant to be worn — worn into the feast, worn through the dancing, worn out from too much joy and too much love and too much living in the kingdom. Paul's list in Colossians is not a checklist of religious duties. It is a description of what a person looks like when they have truly put on Christ and walked out the door. Mercy, witness, generosity, singing, forgiveness — these are the signs that the clothes fit. Go and wear them out. That is what they were made for.
