LWM Gathering & Quilt Auction

Melody Schlie • October 7, 2024

It has been said that if you’re a Lutheran woman, you are automatically part of Lutheran Women in Mission!

Welcome to one of the many open arms of our women’s ministries here at St. Peter’s. This one connects not only to ladies in our own church, but spreads her wings regionally, nationally, and far across the globe. The joy of Lutheran Women in Mission is with works of mercy to those in need which had its beginnings in the 1850s. That’s a long legacy of care.

Our St. Peter’s LWM ladies quilt (on Thursdays) and knot blankets (4th Monday each month) to be sent around the world through Lutheran World Relief and also send some quilted comfort on more local (national) mission trips led by Social Ministry Team member, Mike Bultemeier. In fact, 551,700 quilts have been shipped to over 14 countries! A facinating video about how our quilts brought comfort to crews on ships stuck in Baltimore after the Key Bridge collapse can be found at www.lwr.org/backyard. You should already see quilts and aprons displayed in the Ministry Center for our annual Quilt Auction starting Saturday, October 12th. Funds from this auction are used to offset the shipping costs of these quilts internationally.

Quilting and knotting aren’t the only mission our LWM coordinates for our congregation to participate in. Every month, our Compassionate Care Collection seeks out local needs in the Fort Wayne area to show love to our neighbors and support organizations who strive to do the same. You notice sometimes our Compassionate Care Collection might line up with the Special Monthly Offering which is determined by our MIT (Ministry Impact Team). This allows us as a congregation to have a greater impact through in-kind donations as well as financial support to our local community. When our members donate to one of these monthly mission opportunities, they are participating in our Lutheran Women in Mission. This is one of the ways the hands and feet of St. Peter’s moves out beyond our walls. God does great things with even the smallest of contributions. You are part of His great work to bless our neighbors in this way.

The East Zone Gathering for our Lutheran Women in Mission will be hosted at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 12th. You can get in an early bid for a quilt! The cost is only $7 when you register. Registration will start at 8:30 am in the Ministry Center and worship in the Sanctuary will follow at 9:00 am. Brunch will be served in the Cornerstone Room on the Lower Level at 11 am.

We are so pleased the East Zone chose to use their in-gathering to serve our very own missionaries in Uruguay, Pastor Sharp, his wife Angie and their children. Bring your mites (coins) and offerings to support the great commission in Uruguay. God’s blessings to all Lutheran Women in Mission and to those they serve.

You are invited!

I want to share a story, actually several stories. I remember when I was young in Tulsa, Oklahoma and in Fredericktown, Missouri, of going up to the altar rail with my parents and receiving a blessing from my pastor. I remember sticking my head in between the posts on the altar rail and the pastor giving me a blessing. I don't exactly remember the words, but I knew it was important and I wanted that blessing. I remember in confirmation learning about what the pastor was actually saying, what those words actually meant. To understand what God was saying in his scriptures and growing in it. Overall, just being absolutely amazed at what my pastors, Pastor Sean and Pastor Beering were teaching me and knowing God better and just the joyfulness of it. And I remember Lyndi going through confirmation, adult confirmation, with Pastor Schueler in Rosenberg, Texas, and then seeing from her eyes what it meant to be Lutheran, to understand the faith. I had grown up in the Lutheran church, so it was all ordinary for me, but for her it was extraordinary to know and to understand and have that time with a pastor. And I'm so thankful for the pastors in my life and all of the other church workers that have been a part of my life who have helped me to understand who God is. I mentioned in this weekend’s sermon that there's an initiative, a program through the LCMS called Set Apart to Serve. It points out that we have a lack of pastors, teachers, and other church workers. Set Apart to Serve reminds us that the Lord asks us to pray for laborers for the harvest, and I encourage you to pray for laborers for the harvest. To pray for those that teach us who God is and to help us to understand how much we need him. If you happen to know some young people considering church work or being pastors, pray for them, encourage them. God has gifted them to us to answer our questions. Pray fervently that the Lord would send workers into his harvest so that we know him. Keep that in your prayers. I encourage you to look for people who would be good to take God's calling into his church. May the Lord provide workers for His harvest that we may know God and how richly He blesses us. Amen.
