5 Day Devo
Sermon by Pastor Nate Widener
Day 1: The True Source of Security
Reading: Matthew 6:19-24
Devotional: In a world that often equates security with financial wealth, Jesus challenges us to reconsider where we place our trust. Just as Pastor Nate's sermon highlighted John D. Rockefeller's insatiable desire for "just a little more," we too can fall into the trap of believing that material possessions will bring us peace and contentment. Yet Christ reminds us that earthly treasures are temporary and vulnerable to decay.
Instead, He invites us to store up treasures in heaven – acts of love, kindness, and faith that have eternal value. Reflect on areas in your life where you might be placing too much trust in material wealth. How can you shift your focus to building a "spiritual portfolio" that is pleasing to God? Remember, true security comes not from our bank accounts, but from our relationship with our Heavenly Father who provides for all our needs.
Day 2: Serving One Master
Reading: Luke 16:10-13
Devotional: Today's passage echoes the sermon's emphasis on the impossibility of serving two masters. Just as we cannot simultaneously face north and south, we cannot fully devote ourselves to both God and mammon (material wealth). The love of money can subtly creep into our hearts, competing for the devotion that rightfully belongs to God alone.
Consider the areas in your life where financial concerns may be overshadowing your trust in God. Are there decisions you're facing where the pursuit of wealth is conflicting with your spiritual values? Remember that God calls us to be faithful stewards of our resources, not slaves to them. Pray for discernment to recognize when the love of money is encroaching on your love for God, and for the strength to consistently choose devotion to your true Master.
Day 3: The Heart of Giving
Reading: 2 Corinthians 9:6-15
Devotional: The sermon touched on the spiritual significance of giving, not just as a means to "keep the lights on" in the church, but as a profound act of trust and worship. Today's passage expands on this, emphasizing that God loves a cheerful giver. When we give generously, we're not just supporting a cause; we're participating in God's work of grace in the world.
Reflect on your own attitude towards giving. Do you see it as a burden or a joy? An obligation or an opportunity? Consider how your giving – of time, talents, and resources – can be an expression of gratitude for God's abundant blessings in your life. Remember, our giving is a tangible way of declaring that we trust God more than we trust in material wealth. How might you cultivate a more cheerful, generous spirit in your giving this week?
Day 4: True Riches in Christ
Reading: Ephesians 1:3-14
Devotional: The sermon reminded us that the true riches of God are found in His Son, Jesus Christ. Today's passage beautifully outlines the spiritual blessings we have in Christ – adoption, redemption, forgiveness, and the seal of the Holy Spirit. These are treasures that far outweigh any earthly wealth.
Take time to meditate on each blessing mentioned in this passage. How do these spiritual riches compare to material possessions in terms of bringing you lasting joy, peace, and security? Thank God for the lavish way He has poured out His grace upon you through Christ. Consider how embracing your identity as God's beloved child, redeemed and forgiven, might change your perspective on what truly matters in life.
Day 5: Living with Eternal Perspective
Reading: Colossians 3:1-4
Devotional: Pastor Nate's sermon concluded by urging us to choose the master that offers eternal life. Today's passage calls us to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things. This doesn't mean we ignore our earthly responsibilities, but rather that we approach them with an eternal perspective.
Reflect on how your daily decisions and priorities might change if you consistently viewed them through the lens of eternity. Are there areas of your life where you've become too focused on temporary, earthly concerns at the expense of eternal values? Ask God to help you "seek first His kingdom" (Matthew 6:33) in all aspects of your life. Remember, your life is now hidden with Christ in God – this is the ultimate security and source of meaning that no earthly treasure can match.
Dear friends,
As you conclude this devotional series, commit to regularly examining your heart, ensuring that your primary allegiance is to Christ alone. May you find true richness, security, and purpose in serving the Master who offers eternal life.
