5 Day All Saints Devo
Sermon by Pastor Nate Widener
All Saints Day Devo Rooted in Hope: A Journey Through Loss, Faith, and Eternal Life
Day 1: The Multitude Before the Throne
Reading: Revelation 7:9-17
Devotional: Heaven is not a vague hope or a comforting fiction. It is a described reality, populated by an innumerable company of believers from every nation, tribe, and language, all gathered before the throne of God. The same Christ who carried the cross now shepherds his people to living water and personally wipes every tear from their eyes. This is not poetry meant to soothe. It is promise meant to anchor. When grief weighs heavily, return to this passage and remember: what your loved ones now experience is not absence. It is arrival.
Day 2: Washed Clean by the Blood of the Lamb
Reading: 1 John 1:5-9
Devotional: The white robes of the saints in Revelation are not earned through moral achievement or personal goodness. They are washed clean in the blood of the Lamb. This is the great reversal at the heart of the gospel: what should stain instead purifies, because Christ bore the stain himself. The verse in 1 John reminds us that when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive them and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Your standing before God does not rest on your record. It rests on his. That is a foundation that cannot be shaken.
Day 3: Light and Momentary
Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:7-18
Devotional: Paul's description of this life as a light and momentary affliction is not a dismissal of suffering. He wrote these words from within genuine hardship, having been beaten, imprisoned, and rejected. What gives him the freedom to use such language is not the smallness of the pain but the immeasurable greatness of what waits on the other side. The eternal weight of glory he describes dwarfs every trial by comparison. This does not mean your grief is invalid. It means your grief has a horizon. The outer self wastes away, but the inner self is being renewed, day by day, through Word and Sacrament.
Day 4: The Shelter of His Presence
Reading: Psalm 23
Devotional: The image of God wiping away every tear in Revelation echoes the tender, personal care described throughout the Psalms. In Psalm 23, the Lord is not a distant sovereign issuing decrees from a throne room. He is a shepherd who walks beside his sheep through the valley of the shadow of death, whose rod and staff bring comfort in the darkness. This same shepherd, described in Revelation as the Lamb in the midst of the throne, guides his people to springs of living water. The God who sustained you through every difficult season of this life is the same God who will receive you into the next.
Day 5: The Communion of Saints
Reading: Hebrews 12:1-2
Devotional: When you gather at the Lord's Table, you do not come alone. The writer of Hebrews describes a great cloud of witnesses surrounding those who run the race of faith. The saints who have gone before you have not disappeared. They are present in a way that transcends what we can fully comprehend, united with all believers through the body and blood of Christ. All Saints Day is not only a day of mourning. It is a day of recognition, that the bonds formed in Christ are not severed by death. Fix your eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of your faith, and run with endurance.
