Sermon by Pastor Adam McDowell

Day 1: The Widow's Faithful Offering

Reading: Luke 21:1-4

Devotional:

The poor widow gave everything she had, trusting God completely for her future. Her offering wasn't measured by its amount but by her faith. In seasons when our resources feel depleted—financially, emotionally, or spiritually—we're invited to trust as she did. What "ends" are you facing today? A dwindling bank account? Fading health? Strained relationships? Like the widow, we can give what we have to God, knowing He sees our faithfulness. Her redemption was drawing near, though she couldn't see it. Yours is too. The same Lord who commended her sacrifice walks with you through every ending, preparing you for new beginnings only He can provide.

Day 2: God's Presence in Life's Endings

Reading: Psalm 46:1-11

Devotional:

Life brings many "ends" that shake our foundations—career changes, empty nests, declining abilities, uncertain diagnoses. These transitions can feel like earthquakes in our souls. Yet God declares, "Be still, and know that I am God." He doesn't promise the absence of endings but His presence through them. The psalm reminds us that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. When nations rage and kingdoms fall, when our personal worlds crumble, He remains. Today, identify one "ending" causing you anxiety. Rather than fixing it immediately, practice stillness. Raise your head. Your redemption—God's intervention, comfort, and ultimate victory—is drawing near, even now.

Day 3: Enduring Through Persecution and Trial

Reading: James 1:2-12

Devotional:

Jesus warned His followers they would face arrest and persecution. While we may not face literal imprisonment, we encounter trials that test our faith—mockery for our beliefs, isolation for our values, suffering that makes us question God's goodness. James encourages us to "count it all joy" because testing produces steadfastness. This doesn't mean pretending pain doesn't hurt; it means trusting that God is working through it. Jesus promised to give us words to speak when we're challenged. He provides wisdom for each trial. Are you enduring something difficult today? Don't rely solely on your strength. Ask God for the endurance to remain faithful. The crown of life awaits those who persevere, not those who never struggle.

Day 4: Signs and the Coming Redemption

Reading: Romans 8:18-25

Devotional:

Creation groans, waiting for redemption. We groan too, experiencing suffering's weight while hoping for glory's revelation. Paul assures us that present sufferings aren't worth comparing to coming glory. The "end times" aren't just future events but our current reality—living between Christ's resurrection and His return. Every earthquake, every tear, every injustice reminds us this world isn't our final home. Yet these signs aren't meant to terrify but to awaken hope. When you see brokenness around you, let it prompt you to "straighten up and raise your head." Your redemption—complete healing, restoration, and eternal life with Christ—draws nearer each day. Live today with hopeful endurance, knowing God's promises are certain.

Day 5: Christ's Nearness in Word and Sacrament

Reading: John 6:47-58

Devotional:

Jesus doesn't leave us alone to face life's endings or the world's final days. He comes near through His Word and the Lord's Supper. Just as He promised to give disciples words to speak during persecution, He speaks to us through Scripture, preaching, and fellow believers. In communion, His body and blood proclaim His death and resurrection until He comes again. This meal isn't mere symbolism; it's Christ's real presence sustaining us through every trial. When anxiety about the future overwhelms you, return to these means of grace. Read Scripture. Participate in communion. Listen for God's voice through others. His redemption isn't distant—it's as near as the bread and wine, as close as His living Word dwelling in your heart.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I hope this note finds you well and encouraged in the Lord. St. Peter’s continues to be a place where God is at work through our preschool, school, various ministries, and the daily faithfulness of His people. I am grateful to serve the Lord with you in this place! As we continue to serve together, I want to update you on changes in our church office and ministry staff. As many of you know, Michelle Leahy has been serving as our “Interim Director of Operations,” providing support and coordination across many areas of congregational life. In the coming weeks, Michelle will be stepping into a new role, “Executive Director.” This means her work will shift from hands-on ministry support to more administrative leadership and oversight of the church office, properties, finances, and technology. This is an important step for us as a congregation as we continue to support our staff and serve our members. With this change, we want to ensure that daily ministry needs are met. After reviewing our current staffing and budget, we can make an adjustment that supports the ongoing ministry without increasing costs. To that end, Kami Jo Mogelvang will expand her role to serve as “Church Ministry Coordinator.” Many of you have already seen Kami Jo assisting Pastor McDowell in youth ministry two days each week. Under the new alignment, she will: Continue serving in youth ministry, and Help coordinate ministry efforts and volunteer connections with Pastor Nate and Pastor McDowell across the congregation. This will help us strengthen volunteer support and the many “connecting points” that help our church family care for one another. As Kami Jo transitions out of her receptionist duties, this change will open about 18 hours per week at the front desk, which we have posted. This staffing arrangement stays within our approved 2025 budget. I am thankful for Michelle, Kami Jo, our staff, and all our volunteers. I also appreciate the spirit of grace and partnership that marks our congregation. Please keep our staff and ministry leaders in your prayers as we move through these transitions. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for the privilege of serving Christ with you! In Christ, Pastor Danny Eggold St. Peter’s Lutheran Church & School
