5 Day Devo
Sermon by Pastor Adam McDowell: Finding Rest in God's Presence
Day 1: When Expectations Overwhelm
Reading: Matthew 11:28-30
Devotional: Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him for rest. Like the notifications demanding our attention each morning, life presses in from every direction—work, relationships, responsibilities. We try harder, do more, hoping to finally measure up. But Christ offers something radically different: His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He doesn't add to your list of demands; He offers to carry the weight with you. Today, acknowledge what feels too heavy. Bring your exhaustion honestly before God. He sees your weariness and offers not more expectations, but rest. His presence transforms overwhelming demands into manageable steps taken together.
Day 2: God's Question of Love
Reading: Micah 6:1-8
Devotional: "What have I done to you? How have I wearied you?" God's question pierces through our frantic attempts to appease Him. We offer more sacrifice, greater effort, thinking surely this will be enough. But God interrupts our exhaustion with clarity: He's already told us what is good. He doesn't want our burnt-out offerings born from guilt and fear. He wants justice, kindness, and humble companionship. God isn't another demanding voice in the chaos; He's the one asking why we're so tired, reminding us He never asked for the impossible. Today, stop negotiating with God. Listen instead to what He's actually saying: walk with Me, and I'll show you what truly matters.
Day 3: Blessed Are the Empty-Handed
Reading: Matthew 5:1-12
Devotional: The Beatitudes reveal a upside-down kingdom where blessing comes to those with nothing left to give. Poor in spirit, mourning, meek, hungry—these aren't virtues we cultivate but realities we finally admit. Jesus blesses precisely those who've reached the end of themselves. When you confess you have nothing left, you're positioned perfectly to receive everything God offers. The kingdom belongs to the empty-handed because they alone can receive the gift. Today, consider what poverty you're hiding—emotional exhaustion, spiritual dryness, relational failure. These aren't disqualifications from God's blessing; they're invitations. Blessed are you when you finally stop pretending you have it all together.
Day 4: Fed Before You're Sent
Reading: John 21:9-17
Devotional: After Peter's devastating failure, Jesus doesn't immediately send him back to ministry. First, He feeds him breakfast by the sea. Three times Peter denied Christ; three times Jesus asks about love and offers restoration. Notice the pattern: Jesus feeds, then commissions. God knows we've been living on too little—too little grace, too little rest, too little assurance of His love. Before He sends you into a demanding world, He feeds you with forgiveness, presence, and renewed identity. You cannot serve from emptiness. Today, receive before you give. Let God feed your soul before you face the day's expectations. His table is spread with more than enough grace for whatever comes.
Day 5: Walking Humbly Together
Reading: Genesis 5:21-24; Hebrews 11:5-6
Devotional: Enoch "walked with God"—not a demand but a relationship, a companionship through ordinary days. Walking humbly with God isn't another task on your overwhelming list; it's the privilege of His presence accompanying you through everything else. Like holding hands with someone you love, it transforms the journey. God doesn't wait at the finish line judging your performance; He walks beside you through the failures and successes alike. The demands don't disappear, but you're no longer facing them alone. Today, practice awareness of God's presence in mundane moments. He's not asking for grand gestures but simple companionship. Walk humbly—not perfectly, but together with the One who feeds, forgives, and never leaves.
