5-Day Devo
Sermon by Pastor Adam McDowell
Day 1: When Miracles Look Like Scandals
Reading: Isaiah 7:10-14
Devotional: Isaiah promised an unmistakable sign—a virgin bearing a son. Yet when this miracle arrived, it looked like scandal to Joseph. Sin has trained us to expect betrayal before blessing, to see disappointment instead of divine intervention. How often do we miss God's work because it doesn't match our expectations? Today, ask yourself: Where might God be working in ways I've labeled as problems? The very situation causing you anxiety might be where God is most present. Like Joseph, you may be standing at the threshold of a miracle but calling it a crisis. Pause and consider: what if God is doing something extraordinary in the ordinary chaos of your life?
Day 2: The Righteousness of Damage Control
Reading: Matthew 1:18-19
Devotional: Joseph was righteous, yet his righteousness led him toward divorce and cover-up. This reveals something profound about our fallen world: sometimes our best efforts at doing right still fall short of God's plan. We live in Joseph's world, where faithfulness seems naive and self-protection seems wise. We assume abandonment before we expect loyalty. We prepare for disappointment as if it were inevitable. But God's righteousness surpasses our damage control. Your careful plans to manage shame, avoid hurt, or protect yourself may actually be barriers to receiving God's grace. Today, identify one area where you're operating in "damage control mode" rather than trusting God's unexpected provision.
Day 3: God Speaks Into Our Fear
Reading: Matthew 1:20-21
Devotional: "Do not fear." These words from the angel cut through Joseph's anxious nights and desperate planning. God didn't leave Joseph guessing or struggling alone in his confusion. He spoke directly into the fear. Notice what God addresses first—not the logistics, not the scandal, but the fear itself. Your fears about finances, relationships, health, or future—God sees them. He knows the sleepless nights and the weight of impossible decisions. Emmanuel means "God with us," and that presence begins by addressing our deepest anxieties. What fears are keeping you from embracing God's plan? Write them down, then write over them: "Do not fear—God is with you."
Day 4: Sin Clouds, Christ Clarifies
Reading: John 1:1-5, 14
Devotional: Sin doesn't just break commandments; it trains us not to expect God to act. It puts a mist before our eyes, making divine faithfulness look foolish and God's promises seem too good to be true. But Christmas declares that the Word became flesh—the light entered the darkness. Jesus came specifically to clear away the fog of sin so we could see clearly what God is doing: forgiving, redeeming, restoring. When you feel cynical about God's goodness or doubtful of His promises, remember you're seeing through sin's distortion. Christ is the clarity you need. Today, ask God to remove one specific area of spiritual cloudiness in your life.
Day 5: The Name That Saves
Reading: Matthew 1:21-25; Philippians 2:5-11
Devotional: "You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." The name itself is a promise—God saves. Not just from consequences, but from the sin that clouds our vision, hardens our hearts, and makes us expect betrayal instead of blessing. Joseph obeyed. He took Mary as his wife. He named the child Jesus. His obedience to God's word transformed what looked like scandal into salvation history. Your obedience matters too. When God's word contradicts your fear-based planning, will you trust Him? This Christmas, receive again the gift of Jesus—God with us, saving us from the very sins that keep us from seeing His miracles.
