Physical Wellness: Drumming

It's fun to drum...and so much more!

When I discovered Drums Alive 5 years ago at one of our local YMCA branches I was desperately in need of some self care. I had 2 toddlers and was a totally overwhelmed stay-at-home mom. Drums Alive became a healthy way of removing the physical stress from my body so I could focus on the other needs that I had been ignoring: the needs for adult companionship, a change of scenery, and eventually, even a source of income from becoming a trainer.

It all seems complicated; the movements and the rhythms all done with drumsticks in hand, and when you first attempt it, you feel like you are the most uncoordinated human on the planet. This can be really discouraging. But that’s the moment that I tell my new drummers, “I started where you are. Just have fun and move. I don’t care if it’s right, I care that you are having a good time and moving your body.” Some people take that moment to laugh at themselves and continue, and some I may not see in my classes again. But for those who remain, a real camaraderie can develop, and that is what has happened with our class at St. Peter’s.

Two years ago we set out to improve our physical wellness while we uplifted each other in prayer and through music. We started small – most of the time there were only 3 or 4 of us – but over time, our class grew by leaps and bounds to even include several who are not St. Peter's members. Every Tuesday and Thursday we meet to share in the bond we’ve found while moving this miraculous creation that God has given each of us. We support each other, we laugh, we pray for each other, and we praise our heavenly Father with movement, laughter, and joy. We’d love to share it with you!

You can find further details under "Wellness & Care" on The Hub. This is also integrated into every HOPE Sessions for our Tuesday Night Bible studies, great for those who need childcare. Or you can keep track on the ministry calendar.
