5 Day Devo
Sermon by Pastor Adam McDowell
5-Day Devotional: The Holy Spirit Gathers and Speaks
Day 1: Called by the Gospel
Reading: Acts 2:1-13
Devotional: The disciples gathered in one place, and suddenly the Holy Spirit filled the house like a mighty rushing wind. This wasn't their doing—they couldn't manufacture this moment through their own strength or reason. The same is true for you. You didn't choose God; He chose you. The Holy Spirit called you by the Gospel, speaking to you in a language you could understand—whether through Scripture, a sermon, or a faithful witness. Today, reflect on how God first called you to faith. You didn't stumble into belief by accident; the Spirit gathered you into His family. Thank God that He pursued you first, speaking truth into your heart when you couldn't find Him on your own.
Day 2: Speaking Every Language
Reading: Genesis 11:1-9 and Acts 2:5-11
Devotional: At Babel, God confused human language because of pride and rebellion. At Pentecost, He reversed that curse, enabling the disciples to speak every language so all could hear the mighty works of God. This reveals God's heart: He wants everyone to understand His love. The Gospel isn't locked in one culture, language, or people group—it's for all nations. Consider how God has spoken to you in your "native tongue"—the way you best receive truth. Perhaps through music, nature, relationships, or Scripture itself. God meets you where you are, in ways you can understand. Today, thank Him for making Himself known to you personally, and ask how you might share His truth with others in ways they can understand.
Day 3: The Mighty Works of God
Reading: Exodus 14:13-31 and Colossians 2:13-15
Devotional: When the disciples spoke in various tongues, they declared "the mighty works of God." In the Old Testament, this phrase often referred to God's deliverance of Israel from Egypt—the parting of the Red Sea and defeat of Pharaoh. But at Pentecost, an even greater mighty work was proclaimed: Christ's victory over sin, death, and the devil through His crucifixion and resurrection. The same God who parted waters has parted the veil between you and Himself. Your sins, which once enslaved you like Pharaoh's chains, have been defeated. Reflect today on the greatest mighty work in your life—your salvation. You have been delivered from eternal death. Let this truth fill you with gratitude and boldness to share what God has done.
Day 4: Gathered by the Spirit
Reading: Ephesians 2:11-22
Devotional: Pentecost was a gathering—people from every nation assembled in Jerusalem. The map of nations present that day reveals God's desire: to bring all people together in Christ. You were once far off, separated from God by sin, but the Holy Spirit has gathered you into the church, the communion of saints. This isn't a building but a people—diverse, from different backgrounds, yet united by one Spirit, one faith, one baptism. Today, consider your place in this gathered community. You're not alone in your faith journey. The Spirit has placed you among brothers and sisters who encourage, support, and walk with you. Reach out to someone in your church community today. Strengthen the bonds the Spirit has created.
Day 5: Kept in the True Faith
Reading: Jude 1:20-25
Devotional: Luther's explanation reminds us that the Holy Spirit not only calls and gathers but also "keeps" us in the true faith. This is profoundly comforting. Your salvation doesn't depend on your ability to maintain perfect faith—the Spirit sustains you. When doubts arise, when trials come, when mockers say you're "filled with new wine" for believing, the Spirit holds you fast. He daily and richly forgives your sins, reminding you of Christ's finished work. On the last day, He will raise you to eternal life. You are kept, protected, sealed by the Spirit. Today, confess your struggles to maintain faith. Thank God that your perseverance isn't self-generated but Spirit-sustained. Rest in His keeping power, knowing He who began a good work in you will complete it.
