Sermon by Pastor Nate Widener

Day 1: Adopted into God's Family

Reading: Galatians 4:1-7

Devotional: As we read Paul's words to the Galatians, we're reminded of our incredible adoption into God's family. Before Christ, we were enslaved to sin, but now we are heirs with full rights as God's children. Reflect on what it means to call God "Abba, Father." How does this intimate relationship change your perspective on life's challenges? Today, live with the confidence of knowing you are a beloved child of God, fully accepted and cherished.

Day 2: From Death to Life

Reading: Ephesians 2:1-10

Devotional: Paul's stark contrast between our former state of spiritual death and our new life in Christ is a powerful reminder of God's grace. Like spiritual CPR, God has breathed new life into us and does so every week through worship, the Word, and the sacrament. How often do we take this gift for granted? Consider the areas in your life where you might be drifting back towards old patterns. Recommit to nurturing your faith through regular engagement with God's Word and fellowship with other believers. Thank God for His life-giving Spirit that continually renews you.

Day 3: Freedom from Fear

Reading: Romans 8:14-17, 31-39

Devotional: As adopted children of God, we have received a spirit of sonship, not fear. Paul assures us that nothing can separate us from God's love – not even death. How does this truth impact your daily life? Are there fears holding you back from fully embracing your identity in Christ? Today, consciously replace each worry with a declaration of God's love and sovereignty. Let the reality of your eternal security in Christ embolden you to live courageously for Him.

Day 4: United in Christ's Body

Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

Devotional: Our adoption into God's family also unites us with fellow believers as brothers and sisters in Christ. Paul uses the metaphor of a body to illustrate our interconnectedness. How well are you fulfilling your role in the body of Christ? Consider ways you can deepen your connections within your church family. Make an effort to greet someone new this week, addressing them as "brother" or "sister" to reinforce your spiritual kinship. Pray for unity and love to flourish in your local congregation and the global Church.

Day 5: Living as Heirs

Reading: Romans 8:14-17; Galatians 5:16-25

Devotional: As heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, we are called to live according to the Spirit. Paul contrasts the acts of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit. Reflect on your own life – which list more accurately describes your daily conduct? Remember, your inheritance in Christ empowers you to overcome sin and live a life that pleases God. Ask the Holy Spirit to cultivate His fruit in your life, making you a living testament to the transformative power of adoption into God's family.

I want to share a story, actually several stories. I remember when I was young in Tulsa, Oklahoma and in Fredericktown, Missouri, of going up to the altar rail with my parents and receiving a blessing from my pastor. I remember sticking my head in between the posts on the altar rail and the pastor giving me a blessing. I don't exactly remember the words, but I knew it was important and I wanted that blessing. I remember in confirmation learning about what the pastor was actually saying, what those words actually meant. To understand what God was saying in his scriptures and growing in it. Overall, just being absolutely amazed at what my pastors, Pastor Sean and Pastor Beering were teaching me and knowing God better and just the joyfulness of it. And I remember Lyndi going through confirmation, adult confirmation, with Pastor Schueler in Rosenberg, Texas, and then seeing from her eyes what it meant to be Lutheran, to understand the faith. I had grown up in the Lutheran church, so it was all ordinary for me, but for her it was extraordinary to know and to understand and have that time with a pastor. And I'm so thankful for the pastors in my life and all of the other church workers that have been a part of my life who have helped me to understand who God is. I mentioned in this weekend’s sermon that there's an initiative, a program through the LCMS called Set Apart to Serve. It points out that we have a lack of pastors, teachers, and other church workers. Set Apart to Serve reminds us that the Lord asks us to pray for laborers for the harvest, and I encourage you to pray for laborers for the harvest. To pray for those that teach us who God is and to help us to understand how much we need him. If you happen to know some young people considering church work or being pastors, pray for them, encourage them. God has gifted them to us to answer our questions. Pray fervently that the Lord would send workers into his harvest so that we know him. Keep that in your prayers. I encourage you to look for people who would be good to take God's calling into his church. May the Lord provide workers for His harvest that we may know God and how richly He blesses us. Amen.
