Learning to Fish for Men

Day 1: Called to Follow

Reading: Matthew 4:18-22

Devotional: When Jesus called Peter and Andrew, they left their nets immediately. Yet this wasn't the end of their journey, it was just the beginning. Christ didn't simply recruit them; He promised to make them into something new. This word implies a process, a transformation that would require time, failure, and growth. Today, reflect on your own calling. Are you willing to let Christ teach you, even when the lessons are difficult? Remember, you don't need to be perfect to follow Jesus, you simply need to be willing. He specializes in taking ordinary people and fashioning them into extraordinary witnesses. What nets might Christ be asking you to leave behind today?

Day 2: Learning Through Failure

Reading: Luke 22:54-62; John 21:15-19

Devotional: Peter's three denials of Christ represent his greatest failure, yet Jesus responded with three opportunities for restoration. "Feed my sheep," Jesus asked three times, offering forgiveness for each denial. This reveals a profound truth: God teaches us through our failures, not despite them. Your mistakes don't disqualify you from God's service, they become part of your testimony. Peter eventually died as a martyr in Rome, confidently proclaiming Christ. The fisherman who once cowered before a servant girl became the rock upon which the church was built. What failures are you allowing to define you? Bring them to Jesus today. He specializes in transforming our greatest weaknesses into our most powerful testimonies.

Day 3: Light in the Darkness

Reading: Isaiah 9:1-2; Matthew 4:12-17

Devotional: "The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light." Jesus fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy by bringing light to the Gentiles...to us. We were once enemies of God, dead in our trespasses, dwelling in the shadow of death. But Christ's light has dawned in our hearts through baptism and the Word. This isn't just historical truth; it's personal reality. You have moved from darkness to light, from death to life. Now that great light dwells within you through the Holy Spirit. Consider how profoundly your life has changed because of Christ. Where were you before His light reached you? Today, thank God for rescuing you from darkness, and ask Him to help you shine that light to others still wandering in shadows.

Day 4: God Feeds and Teaches

Reading: John 6:35-40, 66-69

Devotional: The saying goes: "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." But God does both. He feeds you immediately and continuously through His Word, through communion, through the faith He created in your baptism. You don't have to earn your daily bread; He provides it freely. Yet He also teaches you daily, walking with you through trials, showing you how to live as His child. Peter understood this when he said, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." Jesus is both your sustenance and your teacher. Are you availing yourself of both? Come to His table to be fed, and walk with Him daily to be taught.

Day 5: Becoming Fishers of Men

Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:1-6

Devotional: Once we've been taught to fish, our natural inclination is to teach others. This is the beautiful cycle of discipleship. When we experience transformation, we want to share it. Like recovering addicts who become peer support specialists, we who have been rescued from darkness become the most effective witnesses to those still trapped there. You don't need years of theological training to share Christ, you simply need to know what He's done for you. Your acts of kindness, motivated by faith, touch others with that great light. Your willingness to serve demonstrates Christ's love. Today, ask yourself: Who in my life is dwelling in darkness? How can I shine Christ's light into their world? Remember, you're not doing this alone. The Holy Spirit works through you.
