Sermon by Pastor Danny Eggold

Day 1: The Cost of Discipleship

Reading: Luke 14:25-33

Devotional: Jesus' words about the cost of discipleship can be challenging, but they reveal a profound truth: following Christ requires our all. As you reflect on this passage, consider what areas of your life you might be holding back from God. Are there comforts, relationships, or ambitions that compete with your devotion to Christ? Remember, Jesus isn't asking us to give up these things for the sake of loss, but to reorient our lives around Him. In doing so, we discover a deeper, more fulfilling life. Today, pray for the courage to "take up your cross" and follow Jesus wholeheartedly, trusting that His path leads to true life.

Day 2: Choosing Life

Reading: Deuteronomy 30:15-20

Devotional: Moses presents the Israelites with a stark choice between life and death, blessing and curse. This choice echoes throughout Scripture and into our lives today. Every day, we face decisions that either draw us closer to God or pull us away. Reflect on the choices you regularly make in your thoughts, words, and actions. How do these align with God's will for your life? Remember, in Baptism, you have been given life. Now, by the Spirit, you are free to walk in that life. Pray today for strength to remember your Baptism, to turn from sin, and to live as one who has already been chosen and blessed in Christ.

Day 3: Sacrificial Love

Reading: Philippians 2:1-11

Devotional: Paul's beautiful hymn about Christ's humility and sacrifice provides a model for how we should live. Jesus, though divine, didn't cling to His privileges but emptied Himself for our sake. This sacrificial love is at the heart of the Christian life. Consider areas where God might be calling you to "empty yourself" for the sake of others. It could be giving your time, using your talents, or sharing your resources. Remember, when we pour ourselves out in love, we participate in the very nature of God. Pray for opportunities to demonstrate Christ-like sacrifice today, trusting that God will fill you as you give.

Day 4: New Life in Christ

Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-21

Devotional: Paul speaks of a radical transformation that occurs when we are in Christ - we become new creations! This newness isn't just a one-time event but an ongoing process of renewal. Reflect on how Baptism gives you a new identity: a washed, claimed, sent, and beloved child of God. Where do you see evidence of this "new creation"? At the same time, consider areas where you still struggle with "old" patterns or thinking. Invite the Holy Spirit to continue His transforming work in these areas. Remember, you are God's ambassador, called to share the message of reconciliation. How can you represent Christ to someone in your life today?

Day 5: Living Sacrifice

Reading: Romans 12:1-2

Devotional: Paul urges us to offer our bodies as "living sacrifices" to God. This imagery combines the Old Testament concept of sacrifice with the new reality of life in Christ. We don't die on an altar; instead, we live for God daily. This involves a constant renewal of our minds, aligning our thoughts and values with God's. Take some time to examine your daily routines and habits. How can you make these more of an offering to God? It might involve dedicating your work to Him, being more intentional in your relationships, or setting aside time for prayer and Scripture. Ask God to help you see your whole life as an act of worship, transforming even mundane tasks into opportunities for devotion.
