5-Day Devotional: From Doubt to Faith

Day 1: The Gift of Honest Doubt

Reading: John 20:24-29

Devotional: Thomas's doubt wasn't a sign of spiritual failure—it was an invitation to deeper faith. When he declared, "Unless I see... I will not believe," Jesus didn't condemn him but met him exactly where he was. Your doubts don't disqualify you from God's presence; they're opportunities for Him to reveal Himself more fully. Like Thomas, we all struggle with questions about God's promises, His forgiveness, or His plan. The beautiful truth is that Jesus condescends to meet us in our uncertainty. He doesn't demand blind faith but offers tangible proof of His love through His Word, His sacraments, and His presence in our lives. Today, bring your honest doubts to Jesus. He's not threatened by your questions—He's ready to answer them with His wounded hands of grace.

Day 2: God Meets Us Where We Are

Reading: Judges 6:36-40

Devotional: Gideon's repeated requests for signs might seem like weak faith, yet God patiently accommodated each one. The fleece made wet, then dry—God didn't rebuke Gideon's hesitation but graciously confirmed His promise. This reveals something profound about our Lord: He condescends to our weakness. The Almighty Creator lowered Himself to become flesh, to die on a cross, and now comes to us in simple water, bread, and wine. He doesn't demand we climb to heaven; He descends to earth. Whatever confirmation you need today—peace in a difficult decision, assurance of forgiveness, hope in suffering—God is willing to meet you there. He gave His greatest sign at Calvary. Trust that the same Lord who answered Gideon's requests hears yours too.

Day 3: Written That You May Believe

Reading: John 20:30-31

Devotional: John carefully selected which stories to include in his Gospel with one purpose: "that you may believe." Every miracle, every teaching, every encounter with Jesus was recorded specifically for you—you who live two thousand years later, you who struggle with doubt, you who need assurance. The Scriptures aren't insufficient for your faith; they contain everything necessary for you to trust in Christ's finished work. When anxiety grips your heart, when you wonder if God truly forgives, when death seems too final—return to these written testimonies. They weren't preserved accidentally but purposefully, so that in your darkest moments of uncertainty, you would have solid ground beneath your feet. The Bible is God's condescension in written form, His way of saying, "I knew you would need this. Believe."

Day 4: Showing Your Wounds to Others

Reading: 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

Devotional: The sermon reminds us that those who doubt need to see the wounds—not just Christ's, but ours. Paul understood this when he wrote about God comforting us so we can comfort others with the same comfort we've received. Your struggles aren't wasted; they're preparation for ministry. That marriage crisis you survived, that illness you endured, that season of doubt you walked through—these become testimonies of God's faithfulness. When you condescend to others by vulnerably sharing how Christ met you in your wounds, you become a living gospel. Someone in your life is walking in fear and doubt right now. They need to see that resurrection joy is real even amid suffering. Don't hide your scars; let them point to the Healer. Your wounds, touched by Christ, can bring faith to the doubting.

Day 5: Blessed Are Those Who Have Not Seen

Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-9

Devotional: Jesus told Thomas, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." That's you. You haven't physically touched His wounded hands or looked into His resurrected face, yet you believe. Peter calls this "an inexpressible and glorious joy" even while facing trials. This is the Christian paradox: rejoicing in what we cannot see, trusting in promises not yet fulfilled, confident in a Savior we've never physically met. Your faith isn't second-rate because it lacks physical proof—it's blessed precisely because it doesn't require it. The Word spoken, the water of baptism, the bread and wine—these are sufficient because Christ condescends to meet you there. As you face this week's uncertainties, remember: you are among the blessed. You believe without seeing, you hope without grasping, you trust without touching. And one day, faith will become sight. Christ is risen indeed!
