Mother's Day Carnations
Motherhood as Vocation
In the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, vocation is the holy calling through which God serves His world. Motherhood is a distinct and profound vocation: a daily, ordinary means by which the Gospel is lived and handed on. In the rhythm of feeding, teaching, comforting, correcting, and praying alongside her children, a Christian mother embodies Word and sacrament at home. She points her household again and again to Christ, models repentance and faith, and raises little disciples who learn first what it means to be forgiven and beloved.
Beyond biological motherhood, the church is blessed by maternal mentors: grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, and other faithful women in the congregation who invest time, faith, and Scripture into younger lives. These women extend the family of faith, offering spiritual formation, encouragement, and accountability. In a world that often confuses worth with achievement or appearance, Christian maternal discipleship proclaims the Gospel’s countercultural truth: every life is a gift; every child is a soul for whom Christ died.
The sanctity of life follows naturally from this theology of vocation. Honoring mothers and those who nurture others includes protecting and cherishing life at every stage. As you might be preparing to celebrate Mother’s Day, we as a congregation have a simple way to show support for life and for those who "mother" in our community. Following each of our three worship services on Mother’s Day weekend, you may purchase carnations to honor a mother, a maternal mentor, a future mother, or one who has already been delivered to her heavenly home. Proceeds will support Right to Life of Northeast Indiana, whose work aligns with our conviction that life is precious and to be cared for under God.
Consider this small act of thanksgiving and witness: a flower given in honor, a prayer offered for moms and mentors, and a congregation united in bearing Gospel-shaped care for life. In the home and in the church, through word and deed, Christian mothers and maternal mentors continue to form disciples for Christ.
