5 Day Devo
Sermon by Pastor Adam McDowell
Let Not Your Hearts Be Troubled
Day 1: The Father's House Prepared
Reading: John 14:1-4
Devotional: When Jesus spoke these words, His disciples faced imminent loss and confusion. Yet He offered them (and us) profound comfort: God has prepared a place specifically for you. Like parents preparing a nursery for their expected child, your heavenly Father has lovingly made ready your eternal home. This isn't wishful thinking or empty consolation. Jesus stakes His credibility on it: "If it were not so, would I have told you?" Today, whatever troubles weigh on your heart, remember that you are not wandering aimlessly. Your destination is secure, prepared by the One who loves you most. You are expected, anticipated, and welcomed home.
Day 2: Jesus, the Only Way
Reading: John 14:5-7
Devotional: Thomas voiced what we often feel: "Lord, we don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?" In our confusion and lostness, Jesus provides the clearest answer: "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Not a way among many, but THE WAY. This exclusivity isn't narrow-mindedness; it's mercy. In a world of endless spiritual options and philosophies, God has simplified salvation. You don't need secret knowledge, perfect performance, or special access. You need Jesus. You need His death for your sins, His resurrection for your life. When you feel lost in life's complexities, return to this simple truth: knowing Jesus means knowing the way home to the Father.
Day 3: Seeing the Father in Jesus
Reading: John 14:8-14
Devotional: Philip's request, "Lord, show us the Father," reveals our human longing to see God clearly. Jesus' response is startling: "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father." Every healing touch, every compassionate word, every miracle Jesus performed revealed the Father's heart toward you. But even more, look at the cross. There you see the Father's love demonstrated in the ultimate sacrifice. You don't need another sign or wonder to know God loves you. Look at Jesus: His life given for yours, His body broken, His blood shed. In your daily life, recognize the Father's ongoing work in simple blessings like your breath, your family, your forgiveness in baptism and communion. You have seen Him.
Day 4: Greater Works Through Faith
Reading: John 14:12-14
Devotional: Jesus makes an astounding promise: believers will do even greater works than He did. How is this possible? Because Jesus went to the Father and sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in you. You participate in God's redemptive work in the world. While Jesus' earthly ministry touched thousands in Palestine, through believers' witness across centuries, millions have come to faith. Your prayers matter. Your witness counts. Your simple acts of faithfulness ripple into eternity. Today, someone may come to faith because of your words or actions and all heaven will rejoice. Don't underestimate what God can do through an ordinary believer filled with His Spirit. Pray boldly in Jesus' name, asking according to His will.
Day 5: Peace Beyond Understanding
Reading: John 14:27; Philippians 4:6-7
Devotional: "Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." Jesus spoke these words knowing full well the trials His disciples would face, and the troubles you face today. The peace He offers isn't the world's peace, dependent on favorable circumstances. It's peace that transcends understanding, a supernatural calm in life's storms. This peace comes from trusting that God is with you, that He has conquered death, that nothing can separate you from His love. When anxiety weighs heavy, bring everything to God in prayer with thanksgiving. Remember His faithfulness: He has brought you this far, provided for you daily, forgiven your sins, and promised never to leave you. Let His peace guard your heart and mind today.
