5 Day Devo
Sermon by Pastor Danny Eggold
5-Day Devotional: Mixed Up in God's Mercy
Day 1: The Compassion That Moves Mountains
Reading: Matthew 9:35-38
Devotional: Jesus looked at the crowds and felt compassion. This was a visceral reaction that demanded a response. When Christ sees your struggles, your wandering, your helplessness, His compassion compels Him to act on your behalf. Today, consider the areas where you feel most harassed and helpless. Jesus sees you there. His mercy is active, pursuing, and relentless. And remarkably, He often delivers that mercy through the hands and voices of His people. How might God be calling you to be an instrument of His gut-level compassion to someone who is wandering?
Day 2: Sheep Without a Shepherd
Reading: Ezekiel 34:1-16
Devotional: The image of sheep without a shepherd wasn't new to Jesus' audience. Throughout the Old Testament, God condemned leaders who neglected, abused, and abandoned His people. When Jesus used this metaphor, He knew that the religious leaders of His time had failed. And He was also announcing that the Good Shepherd had arrived. You may have experienced spiritual neglect or times when you felt abandoned, unfed, and unprotected in your faith. Perhaps you're experiencing that even now. Take heart: Jesus sees that need. He doesn't leave you to fend for yourself. He feeds you with His Word and Supper, protects you with His presence, and guides you with His Spirit. Where do you need the Good Shepherd's care today? He's already seeking you out.
Day 3: While We Were Yet Sinners
Reading: Romans 5:6-11
Devotional: Paul's words cut through our pretenses: we were ungodly, weak, sinners, enemies of God. Yet Christ died for us anyway. This is the scandal of grace. God's mercy doesn't wait for us to clean ourselves up first. The Good Shepherd laid down His life while they were still lost. You don't have to earn God's compassion or qualify for His harvest. Christ's death and resurrection already secured your place in God's kingdom. Today, let this truth sink deep: you are loved in spite of your weakness. God's mercy is always greater than your need. How does knowing this change the way you approach God today?
Day 4: Sent Into the Harvest
Reading: Matthew 10:1-15
Devotional: The same disciples who were once harassed and helpless sheep became laborers in God's harvest. Jesus didn't wait until they were perfect, fully trained, or completely faithful. He sent them with His authority while they were still learning, doubting, and even struggling. This is God's pattern: He gathers us by mercy, then sends us with mercy. You may feel inadequate for kingdom work, but God specializes in using mixed-up people with mixed-up lives. Your experiences, your struggles, your daily vocations—all become tools in His hands. The harvest is urgent, and God has positioned you exactly where He wants you. Who in your life needs to hear about the Good Shepherd? What small act of mercy can you offer today?
Day 5: Mixed Metaphors, Unified Mission
Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27
Devotional: Are we sheep or wheat? Shepherds or laborers? The answer is “yes,” all of the above! We are simultaneously gathered and sent, recipients and bearers of mercy, weak and empowered. This is the beautiful complexity of life in Christ's body. God takes our different gifts, backgrounds, and stories and weaves them into His redemptive work. You don't have to be a pastor to participate in God's harvest. Parents, neighbors, friends, and co-workers are all called to bear the gospel message in their unique spheres. Today, thank God for the ways He's mixed you into His mission. Your life, with all its peculiarities and imperfections, is exactly what God uses to show His compassion to a harassed and helpless world.
