Sermon by Pastor Paul Dancy

Day 1: Following God's Pattern

Reading: Philippians 3:17-21

Devotional: As we begin this journey, let's reflect on Paul's call to follow godly examples. Just as a craftsman follows a pattern to create something beautiful, we are called to pattern our lives after Christ and those who faithfully follow Him. Consider the "patterns" in your own life - who are your spiritual role models? How do their lives reflect Christ? Today, pray for discernment to recognize and emulate those who truly live out their faith. Remember, you too are a pattern for others. How can you more closely align your life with Christ's teachings, knowing others may be watching and learning from you?

Day 2: Citizens of Heaven

Reading: 1 Peter 2:11-17

Devotional: Peter reminds us that we are "aliens and strangers" in this world. Our true citizenship is in heaven, yet we live here on earth. This dual identity can create tension as we navigate earthly responsibilities while keeping our hearts set on eternal things. Reflect on areas where you might be too attached to worldly concerns. How can you shift your focus to heavenly priorities? Consider one practical step you can take today to live more fully as a citizen of heaven while still engaging meaningfully with the world around you.

Day 3: Transformation Through Christ

Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

Devotional: Paul speaks of our lowly bodies being transformed to be like Christ's glorious body. This transformation isn't just a future event - it begins now as we are made new in Christ. Think about areas in your life where you've seen God's transforming power at work. Where do you still long for change? Spend time in prayer, surrendering those areas to God and asking for His continued work in your life. Remember, just as a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, God is continually reshaping us into the image of His Son.

Day 4: Standing Firm Amidst Worldly Influences

Reading: Romans 12:1-2

Devotional: Our sermon highlighted the dangers of being conformed to worldly patterns. Paul urges us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. In a world full of competing voices and influences, how can we ensure our minds are being shaped by God's truth rather than cultural pressures? Take inventory of what's influencing your thoughts and attitudes. Are there any inputs you need to limit or eliminate? What spiritual practices can you engage in to more actively renew your mind in Christ?

Day 5: Living as Examples of Christ's Love

Reading: 1 John 4:7-12

Devotional: At the heart of being a godly pattern for others is love - Christ's sacrificial, unconditional love flowing through us. John reminds us that God is love, and as His children, we are called to embody that love to the world. Reflect on how you've experienced God's love in your own life. How can you more intentionally demonstrate that love to others today? Consider one person in your life who might need an extra measure of grace or kindness, and commit to showing them Christ's love in a tangible way.

I want to share a story, actually several stories. I remember when I was young in Tulsa, Oklahoma and in Fredericktown, Missouri, of going up to the altar rail with my parents and receiving a blessing from my pastor. I remember sticking my head in between the posts on the altar rail and the pastor giving me a blessing. I don't exactly remember the words, but I knew it was important and I wanted that blessing. I remember in confirmation learning about what the pastor was actually saying, what those words actually meant. To understand what God was saying in his scriptures and growing in it. Overall, just being absolutely amazed at what my pastors, Pastor Sean and Pastor Beering were teaching me and knowing God better and just the joyfulness of it. And I remember Lyndi going through confirmation, adult confirmation, with Pastor Schueler in Rosenberg, Texas, and then seeing from her eyes what it meant to be Lutheran, to understand the faith. I had grown up in the Lutheran church, so it was all ordinary for me, but for her it was extraordinary to know and to understand and have that time with a pastor. And I'm so thankful for the pastors in my life and all of the other church workers that have been a part of my life who have helped me to understand who God is. I mentioned in this weekend’s sermon that there's an initiative, a program through the LCMS called Set Apart to Serve. It points out that we have a lack of pastors, teachers, and other church workers. Set Apart to Serve reminds us that the Lord asks us to pray for laborers for the harvest, and I encourage you to pray for laborers for the harvest. To pray for those that teach us who God is and to help us to understand how much we need him. If you happen to know some young people considering church work or being pastors, pray for them, encourage them. God has gifted them to us to answer our questions. Pray fervently that the Lord would send workers into his harvest so that we know him. Keep that in your prayers. I encourage you to look for people who would be good to take God's calling into his church. May the Lord provide workers for His harvest that we may know God and how richly He blesses us. Amen.
