5 Day Devo
Sermon by Pastor Nathan Widener
5-Day Devotional: Coming to the Table with Grateful Hearts
Day 1: The Mirror of Truth
Reading: Hosea 6:1-6
Devotional: God desires mercy, not sacrifice. When we stand before the mirror of His Word, we're confronted with an uncomfortable truth: our worship can become routine, our faith mechanical. The Pharisees checked all the boxes yet missed the heart of worship: love for God Himself. Today, examine why you come to worship. Is it habit, duty, or genuine thanksgiving? God doesn't want empty rituals; He wants your heart. He longs for you to approach Him not because you must, but because His grace compels you. True worship begins when we stop trying to earn what's already been freely given through Christ's sacrifice.
Day 2: Recognizing Our Need
Reading: Matthew 9:9-13
Devotional: Jesus didn't come for the self-righteous but for sinners. This isn't affirmation of sin, but an invitation to transformation. Like those tax collectors, we must first recognize we're spiritually sick before we can appreciate the Physician. The hardest step in faith is looking honestly at our sin. This is not to wallow in shame, but to understand the magnitude of what Christ has done. Before you approach God's table, pause and acknowledge your need. Count the ways you've fallen short this week. This isn't condemnation; it's preparation for receiving the overwhelming grace that awaits. Only when we see our poverty can we truly value His riches.
Day 3: Grace That Transforms
Reading: Romans 3:21-26
Devotional: Righteousness isn't earned through perfect attendance or flawless behavior. It's imputed to us through faith in Christ. This changes everything. You don't come to worship to prove your worthiness; you come because Christ has already made you worthy. His blood doesn't partially cleanse, it completely purifies. Every sin, every failure, every dark thought is washed away at His table. This isn't cheap grace that ignores sin, but costly grace that confronts it and conquers it. You stand before God not in your own merit but clothed in Christ's righteousness. Let this truth sink deep: you are fully accepted, completely forgiven, eternally loved.
Day 4: The Table of Acceptance
Reading: Luke 15:11-24
Devotional: Christ welcomes you to His table as family. Like the prodigal's father, He doesn't wait for you to clean yourself up first. Christ runs to meet you, embraces you, and prepares a feast. At communion, you stand on the border between heaven and earth, touching eternity. Christ Himself flows through your veins, strengthening faith that may be weak, answering doubts you're afraid to voice. This isn't a reward for good Christians; it's nourishment for hungry souls. Here, Jesus calls you brother, sister, beloved. Here, He serves you with His own hands. Approach with confidence, not because you're worthy, but because He has made you so.
Day 5: Living in Thanksgiving
Reading: Colossians 3:12-17
Devotional: Gratitude transforms worship from obligation to celebration. When you truly grasp what happened at the cross, the depth of your sin met by the vastness of His mercy, thanksgiving becomes your natural response. You return from the rail cleansed, renewed, empowered to live differently. This is why we worship: not to earn favor, but to express wonder at favor already given. Let this gratitude overflow into your week. When you look in the mirror, see someone made righteous by Christ. When you face challenges, remember you've touched heaven itself. When you serve others, do so from the overflow of being served by God Himself. Steadfast love, not empty sacrifice. This is what He desires.
